On the weekend, when footsteps start to bustle in the Shinkaichi area, EAST COAST, open only on Fridays and Saturdays, comes to life along with its vivid neon lights.

A well-established venue, it started in the late 70s as a music bar for foreigners. Since then it has continued to be loved by rock fans. Let’s have a look inside.

The lounge is decorated with album jackets of 70s and 80s rock artists like Nirvana, Metallica and Ozzy Ozborne. Screens show them on video. From the DJ booth, grunge and metal bands’ greatest hits are played at high volume.

There are many ways to have fun in the spacious interior. There are tables for all sorts of games, including billiards, darts and American beer pong. Incidentally, in the games area there is a Beatles poster… but according to Mr Yamakawa, the owner, “we don’t actually play the Beatles.”

Drinks are pay on delivery. You order at the bar, and then pay when you get your drinks. The drink menu at the bar is written in English. They accept yen or dollars.

The mixed drinks, rum or gin with juice, cola, or tonic, and the shots, of all kinds of spirits and liqueurs, are apparently popular with the foreigners. If you’re a rock fan, why not come and experience the heart of this area’s character?
